How we detail and protect classic cars, from an air-cooled Porsche 911 Carrera to a BMW E28 and Nissan Skylines, plus tips for caring for old school cars in Minnesota.

Updated October 2026.

Not every car that comes through our Edina shop is new. Some of our favorite projects are old school: air-cooled Porsches, classic BMWs and Japanese legends that have been loved for decades. Older paint, rubber, chrome and interiors need a different approach than a car fresh off the dealer lot. Here's how we care for classics, and what owners in Edina and the Twin Cities should know.

Why classic cars need a gentler touch

Older paint is often thinner and softer than modern factory clear coat, and some classics have single-stage paint with no clear coat at all. Many have also been repainted at some point. That means aggressive polishing can remove too much paint, and harsh chemicals can stain trim, rubber and original badges. Every classic we work on starts with an inspection. We check paint thickness, look for past repairs and decide how much correction the car can safely handle.

Paint correction for older paint

Years of washing, storage and sun leave swirls, haze and oxidation. Careful paint correction brings back depth and gloss without taking more paint than necessary. On many classics, a one-step polish is the right choice: a big improvement in shine with minimal paint removal. When the paint has enough thickness, a full correction can make it look better than it has in years.

Interior detailing for classics

Classic interiors are often original and hard to replace. Vintage leather, vinyl, carpet and cloth inserts like the houndstooth seats on this 911 need the right cleaners and gentle tools. Our auto detailing service cleans and conditions every surface, from the gauges and steering wheel to the door panels and carpets, without drying out or fading original materials.

Protection that preserves the car

  • xpel ceramic coating: A ceramic coating adds deep gloss and makes the paint easier to clean. It also helps protect against UV fading, bird droppings and water spots, which matters on paint that's hard to match.
  • paint protection film: Clear, self-healing film on the front end protects against rock chips. It's the best way to keep original or freshly restored paint perfect if you plan to drive the car, not just show it.
  • Trim and rubber care: Protecting seals, rubber bumpers and black trim keeps them from cracking and fading.

More than Porsches

We see a wide range of classics in our shop, from 1980s BMWs to Nissan Skylines. Each one has its own paint, trim and materials, so each one gets its own plan. Whether your car is a weekend driver, a show car or a long-term project, we'll recommend services that fit how you use it.

Storing a classic through a Minnesota winter

  • Wash, decontaminate and protect the paint before storage so dirt and moisture don't sit on it for months.
  • Clean and condition the interior to prevent mildew and dry leather.
  • Use a soft, breathable car cover in a dry garage.
  • Book a spring detail so the car is ready for its first drive of the season.

Frequently asked questions

Is paint correction safe on old or original paint?

Yes, when it's done carefully. We inspect and measure the paint first, then use the least aggressive method that gets results. On thin or original paint, a light one-step polish is often the best choice.

Can you put a ceramic coating on a classic car?

Yes. A ceramic coating works well on classic paint, including many single-stage finishes, as long as the paint is properly prepped. It adds gloss and makes the car easier to keep clean between drives.

Should I put PPF on a classic car?

If you drive it on the highway, it's worth considering, especially on the front end. Rock chips on original or restored paint are expensive and hard to repair. Clear film protects the paint without changing the car's look.

How often should a classic car be detailed?

Most owners do a full detail in the spring and a protection detail before winter storage, with careful hand washes in between. Show cars may need more frequent attention before events.
